HEALTHY INFANTS . . . HEALTHY EYES . . . HEALTHY FUTURES!
From birth, babies begin exploring the wonders in the world with their eyes. Even before they learn to reach and grab with their hands or crawl and sit-up, their eyes are providing information and stimulation important for their development. Healthy eyes and good vision play a critical role in how infants and children learn to see. Eye and vision problems in infants can cause developmental delays. It is important to detect conditions early to ensure babies have the opportunity to develop the visual abilities they need to grow and learn.
InfantSEE®, a public health program, managed by Optometry Cares® -The AOA Foundation, is designed to ensure that eye and vision care becomes an essential part of infant wellness care to improve a child's quality of life. Here at Eyes Plus, we provide a first-time comprehensive infant eye assessment between 6 and 12 months of age free of charge regardless of family income or access to insurance coverage. |
InfantSEE Provider
Dr. Tara Tagami |
According to the guidelines set by the American Optometric Association (AOA), children should receive their first eye exam at 6-12 months, at age 3, before starting first grade, and every year thereafter. InfantSee is a public health initiative that spreads awareness regarding the early integration of vision care as part of one's wellness routine by providing infants between 6-12 months of age with a first-time no-cost examination, regardless of family income or access to insurance coverage.
A complete InfantSee assessment performed by our licensed optometrist, Dr. Tara Tagami, will include an evaluation of ocular motility, binocularity, visual acuity, refractive error, and ocular health. This thorough ocular health examination allows for the early detection of any vision problems, developmental vision delays, and ocular pathology. By 6 months of age, babies should be able to converge their eyes, track objects, see color, and notice depth perception. Commonly diagnosed conditions amongst this age group include crossed eyes, high refractive error, congenital cataracts, and retinoblastoma. |
Early intervention is key to optimizing visual development. Thus, InfantSee and annual eye exams are a great addition to the wellness examinations provided by Eyes Plus. By educating parents and caregivers on the importance of having an ocular evaluation during this critical age, we can work together to ensure that all children are able to reach their fullest vision potential!
