Dr. Hank Makini, OD
Doctor of Optometry & Clinic Director
Specializing in Neurolens (Eye Misalignment, Migraines, Neckpain), Ocular Surface Disease (Dry Eye), Geriatric Vision Care, & Pediatric Vison Care (Misdiagnoses of ADHD, Academic Vision Care, Sports Vision) Dr. Hank Makini is a graduate of St. Louis High School in Hawaii. From 1979 to 1987, he attended Pacific University and its College of Optometry, where he pursued his passion for vision science. During his time at Pacific University, Dr. Makini also served as a "live-in" firefighter at the Forest Grove Fire Department for eight years, demonstrating his strong sense of community service. In 1983, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Visual Science, followed by a Doctorate in Optometry in 1987. His doctoral thesis focused on Sports Vision, an area of specialty that reflects his interest in the critical connection between vision and performance. |
Returning home to Hawaii, Dr. Makini started working as an associate for an established office in Waianae on the leeward side of Oahu. It was in 1990 that Dr. Makini and his wife, Sharon, opened their own private practice in the nearby community of Nanakuli. Already community minded, he initiated a vision screening program for local elementary schools, specifically for students in the Chapter One reading program. Dr. Makini then relocated his practice to the newly established "Second City" of Kapolei where he became the first and only optometrist in Kapolei continuing to serve the community and build his reputation as a trusted optometrist.
From 1999-2000, Dr. Makini served on the Executive Board of the Hawaii Optometric Association. In 2000, Dr. Makini expanded his commitment to public service by running for the Hawaii State Senate. He later served on the Ewa Neighborhood Board from 2001 to 2003. Then from 2006 to 2011, Dr. Makini was appointed to and served on the Hawaii State Optometric Board of Examiners. In addition to his professional and civic involvement, from 2006 to 2014, he and his wife, Sharon, served their church as associate pastors.
A strong advocate for public education on eye health, Dr. Makini dedicates much of his time to increasing awareness about the critical importance of vision care across all ages—from infants and students to professionals, athletes, computer users, and seniors. Project S.A.V.E., which stands for Supporting Academic & Vision Excellence, has remained a central focus of his efforts since 1999. As Project S.A.V.E. promotes the awareness of the crucial impact that the human visual system has on learning, child development and overall quality of life, it has proven to be powerful and impactful.
Dr. Makini’s daily mission is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of his patients—one life at a time. Outside of his professional and ministry work, he enjoys spending quality time with his family, watching inspirational films, engaging in home improvement projects, exercising, writing, and teaching.
Dr. Makini gives all honor and glory to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for his life and purpose in serving others through the profession of optometry.

Resident Dr. Shelby Fujitani
Resident Optometrist & Clinic Technician
Specializing in Ocular Surface Disease (Dry Eye) & Geriatric Vision Care Dr. Fujitani grew up in Mililani and is a 2011 graduate of Mid-Pacific Institute where she was very involved with her class office, multiple leadership roles, a variety of clubs, and sports. She attended Willamette University were she was very active with her Hawaii Club and Luaus. In 2015, she graduated from Willamette University with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a minor in Economics. Since helping others improve their quality of life was high on her list of life goals, it was plain to see that a career path in the healthcare field seemed the right fit. But it was through both an experience of shadowing a friend’s mother, (an optometrist), along with her own mother’s expression of how proper corrective vision has always played such an important role in her life, that helped spur Dr. Fujitani on in pursuit of a career in Optometry. |
It was then that she began her journey by first working at a local optical lab, which helped her gain experience with not only mounting lenses into frames, but learning about the interesting lens process as well.
In May 2022, Dr. Fujitani graduated from Pacific University’s College of Optometry program in Forest Grove, Oregon, and moved back home to Hawaii. “Growing up on a small island showed me how important it is to give back to the same community I have come to appreciate, know and love.” So now not only is she able to give back to her home state and fulfill the desire to help others, but is in the best possible position to always make sure her mom will never live without one of the things she finds most important in this world. Quality vision care.
Dr. Fujitani prides herself in providing the best possible care by being sure each of her patients receives a great educational experience, answering any questions that may arise, so that they always know what’s going on with their eyecare, coupled with improving their quality of life by providing them with the best possible vision through the highest quality products that we, at Eyes Plus, Inc., have to offer.
In her spare time, Dr. Fujitani enjoys spending time with family, playing with her dog, watching movies, participating in cultural activities like bon dancing and finding great places to eat.
Finally, when asked what she loves about Eyes Plus, Inc., she states: “I enjoy how uplifting our office is and how everyone has the same goals on how to improve our skills to do better for our patients each and everyday. I love how welcoming everyone is. It makes patients enjoy coming back to the office because everyone treats them with so much respect and kindness, and they are really made to feel they are part of the family.”

Ariana Jacquet
Office & HR Manager/Marketing Asst./Optician
Aloha, I'm Ariana Jacquet, the Office Manager here at Eyes Plus. I enjoy being able to make sure that every patient is serviced with the utmost care and are treated as our own ‘Ohana (familly). If there are any concerns administratively or otherwise, I'm most happy to assist in any way possible to help make your visit a great success. As the second eldest daughter of Dr. Makini, I consider it a privilege to be working alongside him, helping to create a genuinely friendly, family-oriented office for our patients to feel comfortable and confident in with each visit, year after year. I am a 2012 graduate of Kapolei High, a 2016 graduate of Shidler College of Business from UH Manoa with a B.B.A. in Human Resource Management and a second major in International Business. I've always had a real passion for helping people and a knack for business, so it seemed most fitting to combine them both with the honor to now be servicing you, our valued patients. |
Being the daughter of an Optometrist, I learned at an early age the importance of not only good eye health, but the value of being checked yearly to continue to be monitored for any visual changes that would affect my ability to perform well, both in and out of school. As an elementary student, my vision was normal, 20/20. It was not until junior high that I noticed the need to squint in order to clearly see the board, at which time, Dr. Makini prescribed glasses for me which helped tremendously and is a greatly added fashion piece to my look. During my senior year in high school I became interested in contact lenses with all the benefits and conveniences it provided. I quickly learned there are a variety of contact lens brands in the marketplace and was very thankful that Dr. Makini has always found a very suitable brand of contacts that is just right for me. I love my Dailies Total 1 & Total30, the newest contact lens technology in the market created to feel like a Daily contact lens but worn as a monthly wear. My eyes feel nicely hydrated and I am able to wear my lenses longer without my eyes feeling fatigued, dry and irritated.
I count it a blessing to be a part of the Eyes Plus team. It has allowed me to further develop and expand my skill-set on many levels to become the best at what I do, which in turn enables me to serve our patients with excellence. As I continue to observe our day-to-day operations and patient care protocols, I have gained an even greater appreciation and new found perspective on the importance of not only achieving and maintaining optimal visual health, but how our quality of life is greatly impacted in ways we can't even measure, especially when caught at a young age. Please come on by and allow us to welcome you into the EPI ohana of quality eye health and vision care!
