What is Myopia Management?

Myopia, often referred to as “near-sightedness”, is the inability to see distant images or objects clearly and is the most common ocular disorder worldwide. Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long (axial length), or the cornea and/or eye lens are too curved, relative to the length of the eyeball. A myopic eye focuses images in front of the retina, instead of directly on the retina, resulting in blurry distant vision.

By the year 2050, nearly 50% of the world’s population is expected to be near-sighted. With its rapidly increasing prevalence, myopia is becoming one of the greatest public health concerns due to its role in preventable blindness. Halting or slowing myopia progression has the potential to improve a patient’s long-term quality of life, ocular health, and overall well-being.

Is it Possible to Prevent Myopia from Worsening?

Our specifically trained optometrists in Pediatric Vision and Myopia Management can provide effective treatments.

Myopia management mechanisms stem from the hypothesis that intervention during early school years can decrease future pathological risks associated with higher degrees of myopia.

Early initiation of myopia management is crucial in providing vision stability and preventing severe ocular impairments.

Proper initiation of myopia management has been very successful in slowing near-sighted progression amongst a majority of children of all ages.
If you have a child with or at risk for developing myopia, please do not hesitate to refer them to our office for an initial myopia management consultation.

Current treatment options include:
Multifocal glasses
Low-Concentration Atropine Eye Drops
Orthokeratology contact lenses
Soft multifocal contact lenses

Can Myopia Cause Serious Problems?

Yes.
About 10 percent of people with myopia, the condition worsens in severity.  Sometimes myopia can worsen to the point that it is considered a degenerative disorder, which could cause significant or total loss of vision.

Myopia is a serious condition that can increase the risk of developing ocular diseases later in life, such as cataracts, glaucoma, or retinal detachment.

There's good news!
With regular eye exams and myopia management, you can regain clear vision— while decreasing your risk of developing an ocular disease.
